Portrait 96:

I think the picture is an environmental portrait. It shows some people in the 50ies in Jakarta/ Indonesia going into the river which runs trough the middle of the city. The poor population uses it to wash their clothes and for cleaning themselves.

The picture is shot from the other side of the river what gives the viewer the feeling somebody was right on the water shooting it. i think it is really interesting that we can see two "stories" in one picture. There is this big step between the street and the river in the canal and we can actually see people on both heights, who cannot see each other. The step makes also kind of aline into the picture and devides it.

I like the picture because it seems really interesting with its different levels (street and canal) and i also liked the story behind the picture.
