Cover types
1. Early Magazine Covers
The covers of early magazines (~1700) remind more in the cover of a book than of a magazine. They actually used sometimes the table of contents as a cover. Sure they had no photography or color, too.
2. The Poster Cover
In the time between 1890 and 1960 the poster cover dominated the magazines.
Some of them seemed to be painted pictures ready to hang on to a wall.
Color became a big part of the cover art, photography was partly used also.
3. Pictures Married to Type
In the 20th century, paralell to the poster covers , came up another cover type.
They try to make pictures and words match.
4. In the Forest of Words
Combination of cover art and matching words. Sometimes it looks really overwhelming the way it's made up I think.
