William Wegman and Fay Ray, NY, 1988

I think that is a really good shot and i really like that it is black and white. The fact that William Wegman holds the dog like a baby shows that the the dog is kind of a baby for him.

Cover history

Cover types

1. Early Magazine Covers

The covers of early magazines (~1700) remind more in the cover of a book than of a magazine. They actually used sometimes the table of contents as a cover. Sure they had no photography or color, too.

2. The Poster Cover

In the time between 1890 and 1960 the poster cover dominated the magazines.
Some of them seemed to be painted pictures ready to hang on to a wall.
Color became a big part of the cover art, photography was partly used also.

3. Pictures Married to Type

In the 20th century, paralell to the poster covers , came up another cover type.
They try to make pictures and words match.

4. In the Forest of Words

Combination of cover art and matching words. Sometimes it looks really overwhelming the way it's made up I think.

MY PORTRAIT

I make a self portrait.

funny
dreaming
active

I would like to shoot somewhere outside, maybe sitting on swings . I don't know yet what I plan on wearing, something that represents me. I want to shoot in black and white and in a light that you can see some details.

Sports shoot

Assignment: 09/01/2007

Shutter speed: 500 (high)

We can tell that the shutter speed is high because there is no blur in the picture. The water and the moving dog are really clear.

I shot at a cheerleading meeting in the Akins gym and at the gymnastics practice at Star Center. Mostly I tried to shoot action shots when the athletes are performing.
The most important tip I should have followed a little better is that you always have to remember your shutter speed!!
For example, to take a shot during a play would need a fast shutter speed to prevent blurring, when the action is slower you do not need a so fast shutter speed. It also depends on the light what shutter speed you can use and it can definitely happen that you can’t shoot without a flash in gyms, because they are to dark for the needed shutter speed. (That was my problem in “Star Center”)

I'm really interested inlearning more about photography and about editing pictures in photoshop. I had at some assignments a little trouble in photoshop, because the program was totally new to me and I really would like to learn more about it.
I also would like to learn more about how to shoot well so that I can take what I've laerned back to Germany and if it is fun I could keep on shooting stuff just as a hobby, becasue we do not have any classes dealing with photography, except eventually art.

Portrait 96:

I think the picture is an environmental portrait. It shows some people in the 50ies in Jakarta/ Indonesia going into the river which runs trough the middle of the city. The poor population uses it to wash their clothes and for cleaning themselves.

The picture is shot from the other side of the river what gives the viewer the feeling somebody was right on the water shooting it. i think it is really interesting that we can see two "stories" in one picture. There is this big step between the street and the river in the canal and we can actually see people on both heights, who cannot see each other. The step makes also kind of aline into the picture and devides it.

I like the picture because it seems really interesting with its different levels (street and canal) and i also liked the story behind the picture.

1. What is the difference between a Formal, informal, environmental portrait?

A formal portrait is when the person in the portrait appears really formal, nice dressed and mostly honest posed with a direct look into the camera. It was most likely used in the beginning of the camera ( ~ 1850), because the cameras where not really good developed so the person had to stay in the same position a really long time, because the shutter speed was incredibly slow.
Informal is when the person is more in any position or does not look into the camera. The position of the hands can tell us alot about informality or formality as well. Hands deep in the pockets and a relaxed position is definitely a lot more informal than straight arms down to the side and a stiff body.
An environmental portrait is showing the person in its normal environment and not posed. a good example is the president in his office in the White House beeing bussy talking to somebody.

2. What do the eyes tell us?

They show us if the portrait is posed and if the picture is formal or informal.
A direct eye contact into the camera seems more formal and a look to the side more informal.

3. What does the background and body position tell us?

The background tells us a lot about the person and about the kind of portrait. Often the background is supposed to have a special effect, like telling us something about the person. In a formal portrait the background is most likely plain.
The body position tells us whether the portrait is formal or informal.

4. How does the lighting affect the shot?

It can create a special mood. for a good formal portrait we need good lightning for showing detail, otherwise the lightning can be special.
